HEINEKEN'S GREEN HEARTBEAT OF BREWING
In 2019 BLOC asked Enrichers to make a concept for the interior of the office building at the brewery of Heineken in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands. It is part of a feasibility study to refurbish the office building. The concept is based on a hybrid model to provide office space for 400 employees from Heineken combining with (for example) co-work spaces, an incubator, an academy and several meeting and hospitality functionalities.
SITE & OFFICE BUILDING
FUNCTIONS & ACTIVATION
The employees of Heineken will have more liveliness and inspiration by being in contact with start-ups and
talents. By locating all shared functions at the
end of the co-working spaces, Heineken employees will interact with external professionals occasionally at at work, supporting innovation and creativity.
ENRICHMENT
Reflections of water in the ceiling contributes to a feeling of liveliness
Being able to have always a view to outside - also when you walk in the corridor - makes you able to orient yourself, provides high access to daylight synchronizing you to your biological clock
What is good for plants is also good for people. Plants have a high increase to productivity because they can reduce CO2 levels, making you feel less stressed.
ORIENTATION
By being able to look outside when you enter a floor, it is possible to make a mind-map which is enriching.
1. There are direct multiple sight-lines from the staircases and elevators to outside. When you enter a floor it is possible to see where you are by
looking outside.
2. Every floor looks and feels
significantly different. The beacons are different and the floor plan varies per floor.
With the built design it is difficult to orient yourself in the building because floors are wide and corridors don't have windows. When you enter a floor, you cannot see the outside.
SILENT-TO-SOCIAL WORK SPACES
Open working spaces are naturally organized from social-to-silent, from deeply committed-to-lively. By making one central entry for all the working spaces, the dead ends of the wing become silent places.
Places close to the work entrance become more social and lively.
HALLWAYS EXHIBIT INNOVATIONS
Heineken has 5 main themes for circular and green innovation. Every floor is devoted to exhibit the work in progress of projects in Heineken related to that theme. Startups at the wing of the building are provided spaces based on fitting one of these themes to maximize knowledge exchange and innovation.
IN-HOUSE WORKSHOP TO RE-USE & CONSTANTLY UPDATE THE INTERIOR
Materials and current furniture of the building are refurbished and upgraded for the campus. Start-ups need a maker space to prototype. This maker space has workshops which are run by designers and makers.
With a designer in residence, every three months different experts are invited to upgrade the raw materials of the building into state-of-the-art office design. With lunch talks these experts can inspire employees.
